The project was designed for a retiring couple that wanted the ability to age in place for as long as possible.  Drawn to the arts and crafts style bungalow, they wanted to stay true to the original character and scale of both the house and the neighborhood.  In order to respect the original style of the house and avoid the omnipresent “camel back” bungalow, we designed a modest addition off the rear of the existing structure, maintaining the original rooflines, to accommodate a new primary suite.  An extensive, down to the stud (interior and exterior) renovation of the existing building was also done to ensure both a healthy living environment and that no problems could be hiding, giving the homeowners peace of mind heading into their retirement.  The only existing finishes that were kept were the beautiful, original wooden floors.

Keeping the entire design on one floor was a priority for the clients.  Additionally, while they wanted to maintain the original character of the house, they also desired a more open and connected floor plan that would make their relatively small home feel and act larger than it was.  The attic space was completely renovated and conditioned, providing ample storage space. The wet basement was water proofed and a ducted dehumidification system was installed to maintain suitable moisture levels.
