This pair of duplexes represents the final two buildings of a larger affordable housing development in Woodstock. The architectural language for the development had already been established, so our task was to integrate these final buildings into the larger fabric while simultaneously finding their own voices. We landed on the Victorican “eyebrow” concept of the steeper dormered roof for each unit of the duplex, signifying the two distinct units and providing a sense individuality and legibility.
Each duplex is a two bedroom, 1.5 bathroom home. Due to the grade that each unit is set within, we opted to flip the typical single family house layout: putting the two sleeping rooms on the lower, entry level, and the kitchen and living spaces on the second level, taking advantage of the walkout upper floor on the uphill side, allowing the living room to extend to the exterior and the rear back porch.
